Your driver meets you at your hotel or riad and heads south across the Haouz plain toward the Atlas foothills. Kids can watch the landscape shift from palm groves and olive fields to red earth and rising peaks.
Imlil is the gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 m. Meet your guide, have a mint tea, and get ready with water, sun protection and comfortable shoes.
The walk starts on a wide, easy path past walnut trees, terraced fields and traditional stone-and-clay houses. Aremd is a good chance to see everyday mountain life and greet local villagers.
The trail follows the Assif Ait Mizane river, with views of steep valley walls and, in spring, the snowmelt running strong. Your guide will point out local plants and explain the mule-track traditions of the valley. Take your time and stop for photos.
This whitewashed hamlet clings to the mountainside beside the river. It is known for the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, a revered local saint, and has long been a place of pilgrimage. Please note that the shrine itself is reserved for Muslim visitors, but everyone can enjoy the setting, the atmosphere and the views from outside. Small cafés and stalls sell tea, soft drinks, snacks and handmade souvenirs.
Enjoy a simple Moroccan lunch (tagine, salad, bread) or a picnic beside the river. Kids can cool their feet in the water and everyone can rest before the return.
The way down is gentler and quicker, and you’ll see the valley from a new angle in the afternoon light.
After a final tea in Imlil, your driver takes you back to Marrakech, arriving around 6:00 PM.
How long is the hike from Imlil to Sidi Chamharouch?
The walk takes about 2 to 2.5 hours going up and around 1.5 to 2 hours coming back down, covering roughly 7 to 8 km in total. A relaxed family pace with stops is included in our plan.
Is the Imlil to Sidi Chamharouch hike difficult?
No. It is considered easy to moderate. The path is wide and well established, with a steady but gentle climb, so most people in reasonable health can complete it.
Is this hike suitable for children?
Yes, it is one of the best mountain walks for families near Marrakech. Children aged around 6 and older usually manage it well. Younger kids can be helped by mules or carried in child carriers, and we adapt the pace to your group.

Imlil is about 60 to 65 km from Marrakech, a drive of roughly 1.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
When is the best time to hike to Sidi Chamharouch?
Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) offer comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer mornings are pleasant, but afternoons can get hot. Winter brings cold weather and possible snow on higher paths, so check conditions first.
Can non-Muslims visit Sidi Chamharouch?
Yes, visitors of all faiths can visit the village and enjoy the surroundings. The shrine itself is reserved for Muslims, but the hamlet, river and viewpoints are open to everyone.
Do I need a guide?
The trail is well known, but a guide adds safety, local insight and peace of mind, especially with children. All our tours include a local guide.
Can I continue to Toubkal from Sidi Chamharouch?
Sidi Chamharouch is a common stop on the way to the Toubkal Refuge and summit, but that is a much harder multi-day trek. Ask Marrakech Family Trips about our longer High Atlas options.
Is there food and water on the way?
Yes. Small cafés at Aremd and Sidi Chamharouch serve tea, drinks and snacks. We still recommend bringing your own water.
